Dr. Jatinder Cheema, Director
Dr. Jatinder Cheema, has lived and served in multiple countries managing and overseeing development programs. For nearly thirty five years, she worked in Central Asia, Armenia, South Asia, Afghanistan, and countries in Africa.
Born in 1942 in India, she witnessed history in the making as the subcontinent of India was being divided into separate countries, India and Pakistan. As a daughter of a civil service officer, moving and living in different places was an integral part of her growing up.
In 1975, Cheema moved to the United States for graduate and postgraduatestudies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After graduating, she worked with International Organizations as a development consulted and in 1991 joined the United States Agency for International Development as a career Foreign Service Officer. She reached the ranks of a Senior Executive before retiring
During her career, Cheema sought volunteer opportunities, when possible, to participate in forums to speak to women and young professionals on leadership and career enhancement. After retirement, Cheema, has founded “A Place to Be” for creative conversation and dialogue, in Madison, Wisconsin where she currently lives with her husband. She continues to actively engage in local development issues.
Cheema is passionate about writing. At a Place to Be, Cheema started working on her mother’s memoire, “A life as I Remember – A life History of Raminder Kaur Cheema,” which she published in 2016. Cheema is taking creative writing courses offered by the University of Wisconsin to achieve her lifelong goal of becoming a full time writer.
Cheema has a Masters in Social Work, A Masters in Public Health and a PhD in Social Sciences. READ FULL BIO
Kristin Sage, Program Support
As a long-time east-side resident, Kristin Sage offers periodic operational support and consultation to A Place to Be. A familiar face in the Marquette Neighborhood, Kristin has worked for over 20 years in community development with nonprofits and runs her own business providing yoga instruction and wellness-based education. Also an avid bicyclist, passionate gardener, and mother of a young college student, Kristin is committed to building a strong and healthy community for all people.

Bani Cheema, Consultant
Bani provides consulting support as a Development Professional with several years of experience working with non-profits and small businesses. Areas of expertise include global health and development, program development and management, effective fundraising, grant writing, website and content development, building strong partnerships, strategic communications marketing and event management.
